You use the internet every day. You pay with UPI, chat on WhatsApp, check exam results and log in to job portals. Every one of these actions involves your data and your money. Cyber security is simply the work of keeping that data and money safe.
This guide explains cyber security in plain words. You do not need any technical background. By the end, you will know the key ideas, the common attacks, and the simple habits that protect you. If you are preparing for a job in IT, this is also a good first step.
What is cyber security?
Cyber security means protecting computers, phones, networks and data from people who want to steal, change or break them. Big companies like IBM and Microsoft describe it as a mix of three things: people, processes and technology. Technology alone is not enough. A strong lock is useless if someone hands the key to a stranger.
Think of your phone like your house. The screen lock is the front door. Your passwords are the keys. Software updates repair broken windows. And your own good sense decides whether you open the door to a stranger. Cyber security covers all of these.
Why does it matter?
Most of our life has moved online. Bank accounts, Aadhaar-linked services, college records and job applications all live on servers and phones. Criminals know this. In India, OTP scams, fake KYC update messages, fake job offers and UPI "collect request" frauds are now very common.
For companies, one attack can stop work for days and leak the data of millions of customers. That is why India has CERT-In, the national agency that handles cyber incidents. Organisations in India must report certain cyber incidents to CERT-In within six hours of noticing them. This is also why trained security people are in demand.
Key concepts every beginner should know
1. The CIA triad: the three goals of security
Security experts use a simple model called the CIA triad. Confidentiality means only the right people can see the data. Integrity means nobody can secretly change it. Availability means it is there when you need it.
Example: your exam marks. Confidentiality means other students cannot see them. Integrity means nobody can change 45 to 95. Availability means the result website does not crash on result day.
