Many job posts in India now ask for one extra line on your resume: AWS. Freshers see it in support roles, developer roles and even testing roles. But when you open the AWS website, you see hundreds of service names and feel lost. Don't worry. You do not need to learn everything. In this guide, we explain the few ideas that matter most, in simple words.
What is AWS?
AWS stands for Amazon Web Services. It is a cloud platform run by Amazon. Cloud computing means you use computers, storage and databases over the internet, and you pay only for what you use.
Think of electricity at home. You do not build a power plant. You plug in, use power, and pay the bill for the units you used. AWS works the same way for computing. Instead of buying a server for lakhs of rupees, you rent one for a few hours and switch it off when you are done.
Why AWS matters
AWS is one of the largest cloud providers in the world. Startups, banks, e-commerce sites, OTT apps and government projects use it. Because so many companies run on the cloud, cloud skills now appear in many job descriptions, not only in DevOps roles.
- No big upfront cost: you start small and grow when needed.
- Speed: a new server is ready in minutes, not weeks.
- Scale: handle a festival sale or exam-result day traffic by adding more capacity for a short time.
- Global reach: run your app close to your users, including in India.
- Jobs: common roles include cloud engineer, DevOps engineer, solutions architect, support engineer and backend developer.
The 8 most important AWS concepts
These are the topics beginners need first, and the ones interviewers ask about most often.
1. Regions and Availability Zones
A Region is a place in the world where AWS has data centres, such as Mumbai (code ap-south-1) or Hyderabad (code ap-south-2). Each Region has several Availability Zones, or AZs. An AZ is one or more separate data centres with their own power and network.
Example: if your app runs in two AZs in Mumbai and one AZ has a power problem, the other AZ keeps your app running. Choose a Region close to your users for speed, and to meet any data rules. Note that newer Regions, like Hyderabad, must be turned on in your account before you can use them.
